fall showers

This weekend, some women from my church congregation put on a baby shower for me. It was so much fun and I was blown away by the kindness of everyone! Thank you Lucy for organizing and hosting it!

I felt a little flustered being the center of attention as is evidenced here by my inability to hold the shirt right side up. Isn't the hat awesome?!

Cute little M., who is in the class I teach at church, was a huge help in handing me the gifts to unwrap. She also hid a secret note in one of the packages while we were cleaning up for me to find when I got home.

:) !

The food was amazing. I had a great time getting advice and talking with everyone. And what is more....the cupcake stand was electronic and actually ROTATED!

Of all the gifts, I think these bath toys will be the ones that I get the most fun out of before Isaac gets here. They squirt water....watch out Kent! (Muhahahaha)

Bonzini, the World's Finest Foosball Table

Kent's brother recently bought a Bonzini Foosball table from a guy in Chapel Hill. Since we live so close to Chapel Hill, we agreed to store it at our place until we could bring it up to him during Thanksgiving. So for the past two weeks, we have had the world's best (made in France) Foosball table. Everyday before going to work this past week, Kent and I played a quick game. It was a great way to start the day, even though Kent slaughtered me every time.

Since it isn't everyday that we have a Foosball table in our living room, we decided to have some friends over this weekend for a Foosball tourney. I don't know how, but we managed to fit 11 people plus a Foosball table in our smallish living room. After some delicious Papa John's pizza and rootbeer, the games began.

The World's FINEST Foosball Table.

It was a double elimination tournament with teams of two--we even drew out a bracket. We had some great team names. For example,...

"The Axe-Murderers"
Brittany and Flo could make the goalie slam the ball down the court and score in one kick. It was intimidating.

"Child Please"
At this moment, Christopher is lamenting the fact that he let the ball get past the goalie. Frank is stunned speechless.

"Kiss the Baby"
This team had a big ego problem. They thought they were sooo good. And, no, Aaron is not related to E.T., he just had a reflective logo on his shirt that caught the flash.

"The Winners"

Rebecca and I, picked the name in jest at the beginning because we both didn't feel like we were pro-Foosball players. All my life, I have failed miserably at games. I never got past the first level of Mario Brothers on the Nintendo. I can only make 1 out of 20 baskets in basketball. My brother beat me at chess when he was five years old and I was in high school. But maybe due to the power of positive thinking and some latent skill, Rebecca and I SMASHED Kent and Aaron (aka Kiss the Baby) in two games and actually were THE WINNERS. I have never felt so exhilarated in my life. As we neared the game point, my palms were sweating like crazy, Isaac was kicking up storm in my tummy, and everyone was on their feet cheering. When we thunked the ball into the goal, the room erupted (sorry neighbors for the noise!) and I could almost taste the sweet, sweet victory. It will be one of those memories I will treasure forever.

And during this morning's one-on-one Foosball game with Kent, I won for the first time!

I could get used to this.

Check out these Foosball players---they are just a little better than Rebecca and me.

crafts and art

My sister, C., made me a lovely gift for my pregnancy. It is a necklace with a nest pendant. She is so talented!

During the past week, I also had a little get-together (a pARTy) with some good friends where we painted, drank hot cocoa, and ate some yummy spice cookies and muffins.

I loved the end result of each person's painting venture. I got so absorbed in the fun talk, that I didn't finish my painting by the end of the night--at this point it is called "tree survives acid rain."

But I had a few minutes last night and finished it up (it is a replication of a picture I found on the web that I liked).

update

It has been a busy week!

1) We got a record 33 trick-or-treaters which still did not deplete our huge bowl of candy causing me to eat way to much candy this week. I carved a ghost in a WHITE pumpkin this year (they were the only pumpkins left at the store). I also decorated our door this year with a handwoven web.

2) My wonderful cousin was able to stay with us in a whirlwind visit to Durham while he was interviewed at Duke for the Medical School. He is so smart!

3) Kent shaved his beard for the department beard-growing contest. But even without the beard, he is still manly as evidenced by the topic on the computer screen behind him.

Daylight Savings Time

So I was thinking about daylight savings time and how nice it was to get that extra hour of sleep. Then I started thinking that it would be really nice to live on a planet with a marginally longer rotation period, because then you could get an extra bit of sleep every night, and the days would still be the same. Then I realized that Mars, with a Martian day of about 24 hours and 40 minutes, essentially would give you an extra 40 minutes of sleep every day - without moving the daylight times at all. It would be like a permanent time change, every single day!!!! Just another reason why the colonization of Mars makes a lot of sense.

Happy Halloween

This year, Kent and I dressed up as an overweight lumberjack (me) and a tree (Kent) for the department Halloween Party. It was fun pretending to cut Kent down.

We have a huge bag of quality candy (mini Almond joys and other chocolates) that Kent has firmly refused to let me open during the past week, so we are all set for the trick-or-treaters tonight! Yay!

When I walk by full mirrors, all I can think is, "BIG!"
What size will I be when I am at 40 weeks!!!!????
